SANJIVANI: A STRONG VOICE FOR GIRL STREET CHILDREN OPENS ITS FIRST SHELTER

As of today, 100 girl street children will have a place to call home. A place safer than anything they have ever known, thanks to Sanjivani, a VOICE initiative.

At a function held in Mumbai on Sunday morning, the children of VOICE told the story of this pioneering organisation through a lively song and dance performance.

VOICE (Voluntary Organisation in Community Enterprise) was set up ion 1991 by Victor and Rajashri Bansiwar who began teaching shoeshine boys, at three of Mumbai's busiest railway stations, the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. 15 years later, it has succeeded in transforming 4000 "at risk" street children into educated, productive, self reliant citizens.

With the launch of Sanjivani's first shelter at Virar (exclusively for girl street children), VOICE wants to give them a proper childhood - not a dangerous and hopeless existence on the streets. Sanjivani will play a key role in taking care of over 100 homeless girls from 5 to 15 years, from any religious background. They will be provided with a safe and secure home, nutritious food and clean drinking water. Sanjivani also plans to educate 500 adivasi children from the areas surrounding Mumbai.

Over time, VOICE hopes to add more shelters, by raising funds through the generosity of its donors. VOICE will keep taking in street children as long as the little ones need a safe home, thereby helping to re-write the destines of some of Mumbai's 2,50,000 children who live on the streets.
