Project Sanjivani - FAQ

1) What is Sanjivani?
Sanjivani is an initiative of VOICE, is a home for a girl street children at Virar, Mumbai where they are provided safety and security. This shelter spares them the physical and sexual abuse that these girls face while living on the streets.

2) Where is Sanjivani situated?
On a 2717 sq. mt. plot of land in Virar, about 10 km from Virar station.

3) How many girls can be accomodated in the home?
Around 80-100 girls will live there, while over 1000 children and family members will benefit from Sanjivani's initiative to educate Adivasis from surrounding areas.

4) Why is Sanjivani specially dedicated to girls?
Girl children on the streets face the devastation of sexual abuse. They also work harder than boys to make a living on streets. Often they are forced into childhood marraiges or, even worse, sold into prostitution. It is for these reason that VOICE decided to start a home for these young girls.

5) What are the aspect that the center is taking care of?
Housing, education and vocational training are the three key aspects that the center addresses. The plan includes school building, dormitory, vocational training facility, kitchen, food hall and guest cottages.

6) On what basis are the kids selected?
The kids need to be:
From the street
From 5 to 15 years of age
May be from any religious background
Must be either an orphan or have a single parent

7) Who is the concerned authority of selection?
It is the advisory board and Trustees who will review applications and guide the selection process.

8) Who would be living along with the kids in the center?
The director, his or her assistant, and house parents will all live at the facility to be able to provide quality 24-hour care for the entire year.

9) How are the educational needs of the children looked after?
At Sanjivani, they will be learning from VOICE teachers, house parents and fellow housemates. A curriculum will be specially designed by VOICE to be beneficial for children coming from backgrounds such as theirs. This extra support of non-formal education is what will allow them to truly flourish.

10) What are the other programmes that are organised?
Along with academics, they are involved in value education, indoor and outdoor games, music, Sorenji Kempo - a form of martial arts, educational field trips, yoga, diya making, gardening, tailoring and kitchen work.

11) What are the types of vocational training that the girls are exposed to?
Screen-printing, diya making, sewing, tailoring and computer skills will be learned under the guidance of trained instructors.

12) Till what age will the inmates be given shelter in Sanjivani?
They are expected to leave by the age of 18-20. By this age, these girls would have received all the tools necessary for them to become self-supportive and self-reliant young women
